Gold Icing Tutorial

These Easter Egg cookies are the latest addition to my spring collection. You can see more photos of them here.
...

In this brief tutorial, I'll show you how I embellished these cookies with gold royal icing. It takes a lot of patience and time to apply this effect, but the technique itself is actually very simple.
...
I like to use Wilton gold pearl dust for this method.
...
...
Mix the pearl dust with a few drops of alcohol such as vanilla extract, lemon extract, or vodka.
...
 ...

 ...
Add just enough alcohol so that you achieve the consistency of paint. If you add to much liquid, your icing will dissolve when you try to apply it. If you add too little, your paint will be chunky.
...
...
Pipe your designs in brown icing. Let it dry completely. For this design, I used stiff royal icing and a tip 2.
...
 ...
Very carefully paint the icing with a tiny brush. I'm using a size 0, which I picked up at the local craft store.

  2. Thanks for sharing. I tried this with a really cheap wilton brush and it was very sloppy. I'll try again, but I think I'm better off ordering one of these beauties from you!!

    1. Hi Jenny! I usually just rinse my brush and dab it on a paper towel to get the color out before washing it. What brand of color are you using?

  9. Thank you, thank you. I have my first stencilled cake to do next week and it has to be gold. I didn't know what colour to have my icing before painting and you have solved my dilemma. Thank you, your work is beautiful and inspiring.

I am new in cookie decorating and your tutorials are very helpful. Can you dissolve the luster dust in water instead of alcohol?

    1. Thank you so much!

The luster dust can only be used as paint if you use alcohol. If you use water, it will just dissolve the icing. Thanks for your comment!
